When it came to his students, Albert H. Brigance loved sharing good news. When he began his career as a school psychologist in the 1970s, Al noticed that assessment tools tended to emphasize what students didn’t know and couldn’t do. He wanted to change the conversation.
Al envisioned an expansion of existing assessments for developmental and academic skills—in-depth skill sequences that would reveal what students did know and could do, and results that could support teachers in planning spot-on instruction while monitoring and celebrating progress with parents.
From Al’s vision grew our first product, the BRIGANCE Inventory of Basic Skills, and from there, BRIGANCE evolved into an industry-leading publisher of screeners, assessment tools, and instructional materials for Early Childhood and Special Education professionals.
