Grade 3 Phonics Achievement Substantially Increases

Overview

Below-Grade Level Challenges Remediated

Longwood Central School District's structured learning environment was disrupted by pandemic-related school closures, which especially impacted Grade K students at the time. In support of their goal of having 75 percent of these students—now in Grade 3—on grade level in phonics, the district adopted Phonics for Reading. In just one year, the percentage of Grade 3 students performing on grade level in phonics jumped from 49.5 percent to 72 percent—a gain of 45 percent.
