District Reduces Need for Tier 3 Math Interventions

Overview

Grade-Level Math Gains Reverse Tier 3 Trend

Boaz City Schools initially supported students with disabilities and English Learners with Ready Mathematics and i-Ready Personalized Instruction, eventually expanding the implementation to include all students in Grades K–8 during the 2019–2020 school year. In just four months, students needing Tier 3 interventions in mathematics decreased from 30 percent to 18 percent—as evidenced by the i-Ready Diagnostic for Mathematics. At the same time, the district experienced another significant success, breaking from national trends by maintaining growth students accomplished before COVID-19.

Testimonials

Teachers know how to talk about data in a whole different way than they used to. Now, they’re coming to meetings able to answer questions like, ‘What group have you had [students] in? What prerequisites do you know they don’t have?

— Ashley Walls, Director of Teaching and Learning, Boaz City School System
