District’s New EL Framework Leads to Growth

Pascagoula-Gautier School District (PGSD) has the second-highest English Learner (EL) population in Mississippi. In 2018, district leaders decided they needed to overhaul how they approached EL instruction to meet the needs of this growing population. Dr. Melissa DeAngelo, PGSD’s director of English language education, knew her district needed a research-based instructional approach, a discourse-driven math curriculum, and a proven assessment program.

“We have students who are extremely successful and have been through the program . . . kudos to all the people who have worked with them and all the systems that were in place to support them.” Belinda Dammen, Assistant Superintendent of Elementary Education
