NORTH BILLERICA, MA, March 6, 2014—World's Worst Pet™, an i-Ready® iPad app, has been named a winner of the 2014 Parents' Choice Recommended Award in the Mobile Apps category. The reading app, designed for students in grades 4–8, was chosen by Parents' Choice Foundation's panel of educators, scientists, artists, librarians, parents, and children for its ability to entertain and teach with flair, stimulate imagination, and inspire creativity.
Parents' Choice Foundation has been reviewing and recommending quality children's media for more than 33 years, and its awards program has established the benchmarks of achievement in children's media. The Parents' Choice Awards identify the very best products for children of different ages and backgrounds, and of varied skill and interest levels. By doing so, it provides parents with reliable, unbiased information about quality educational products.
“We are thrilled that World's Worst Pet was recognized by the Parents' Choice Awards,” said Rob Waldron, CEO of Curriculum Associates. “It is an honor that parents, teachers, and children alike have found the World's Worst Pet a valuable, fun, and engaging educational experience. We are looking forward to delighting them further with more i-Ready apps.”
As part of the award-winning i-Ready product line, and previous winner of the 2013 CODiE Award for Best Student Assessment Solution, World's Worst Pet provides targeted skill development specifically focused on Tier Two vocabulary, a key area of emphasis in the Common Core State Standards for ELA (CCSS). In the game, children must use their academic vocabulary skills to help keep Snargg, the troublesome pet of the BakeStars—the onscreen characters from i-Ready's online
lessons—out of danger, but Snargg keeps escaping and gets stuck in strange places.
The app incorporates engaging and pedagogically sound games and requires minimal direction and intervention from teachers or parents. Multiple replay opportunities within a low-risk environment make the app ideal for use at home, as part of small-group classroom instruction, or in classroom activity centers.
“…The app includes a level in which children are asked to write an essay using words learned in the respective level. The activities in this app hone not only recognition, but recall of diverse vocabulary terms. Our reviewers found this component of the app particularly useful,” said the Parents' Choice Awards reviewer. The reviewer additionally recommended World's Worst Pet based on its design, execution, originality, and long-term play/educational value.
