Language in Math: Isn't Math Supposed to Be Language Lite?
Overview
Math is often considered to require less language for learning. At Curriculum Associates, we disagree. We know that bilingual students require more language practice in order to succeed beyond basic facts. To be able to demonstrate mathematical reasoning, thinking, and conceptual understanding is the gatekeeper to higher education. Participants will learn how to use the Try–Discuss–Connect instructional framework to help elevate their students’ understanding of mathematics standards. In addition, we will address how math trauma impacts teachers and students, key language routines, and discuss the need for an alternative approach to teaching mathematics if we hope to close the achievement gap. In this session, educators will learn that every math teacher is also a language teacher.
