Education company Curriculum Associates ranked #12 for medium-sized companies on The Boston Globe's annual “Top Places to Work” list for 2014. Companies that received this esteemed distinction were chosen as the state's most admired workplaces based on surveys completed by the people who know the companies best—the employees themselves. Boston Globe Business Editor Mark Pothier further characterizes these winners as going “above and beyond to motivate and challenge their workers, which tends to encourage innovation and loyalty.”
Curriculum Associates has seen tremendous growth over the past year, and recruiting and retaining top talent has been a top priority for CEO Rob Waldron. With more than 50 percent of his time spent on recruiting, Waldron explains, “My philosophy has always been to hire people, not fill positions.”
This commitment to finding and retaining top talent is brought to life in The Boston Globe's featured quote by Doug Smith, Director of i-Ready® Instruction:
“Our CEO makes a point of finding new ways to express his appreciation,” shares Smith. “When our team in Florida hit an important benchmark, he decided to make a video. At four o'clock, everyone in the home office left their desks and came to the central staircase. The camera rolled, Rob made a quick thank you speech, and we all yelled, applauded, and stamped our feet for a full minute.”
The Boston Globe's 2014 Top Places to Work survey, conducted by employee survey firm WorkplaceDynamics, measured about 73,500 individuals' responses to statements regarding key factors related to employee happiness. Of these key factors, the least important were pay, benefits, and work-life balance, with survey subjects placing much higher importance on employee appreciation, confidence, and a meaningful connection to the work.
Now in its seventh year, the Top Places to Work list is featured in a special section in The Boston Sunday Globe. The full list, along with online extras, can be found at www.bostonglobe.com/topplaces. Readers can follow the news on Twitter at #workboston.
