The data is clear. We’re facing a literacy crisis. But it’s not a crisis without hope. Across the country, districts are proving that with the right strategies, we can reverse these trends. Two standout examples—KIPP New Jersey and Mat-Su Borough School District in Alaska—show us what’s possible when we commit to doing things differently.
In New Jersey, the journey toward transformation began with a shift in perspective. Educational leaders reimagined Tier 1 instruction as the foundational level, ensuring the majority of students had access to the core tools, strategies, and scaffolding essential for reading proficiency. Meanwhile, KIPP’s Tier 2 instruction transitioned into a more refined support model—one that emphasized skills enhancement and enrichment over remediation.
The results were remarkable. KIPP NJ’s early reader proficiency placements in Mid or Above Grade Level grew by 49 percentage points in Grade K, 38 percentage points in Grade 1, and 25 percentage points in Grade 2 in just one academic year using the systematic instruction, research-based routines, engaging text, and real-time assessments in Magnetic Foundations™ for Grades K–2.
HQIM are more than jargon—they’re valuable tools for all learners. In Mat-Su, teachers received early access to Magnetic Foundations and Magnetic Comprehension™ for Grades 3–5, allowing them to prepare and personalize instruction before the school year even began.
This thoughtful rollout led to immediate and measurable gains in student reading proficiency, which is proof that students thrive when we equip teachers with the right tools.
Both districts understood that materials alone aren’t enough. The districts also invested in professional learning that empowered teachers to use data effectively, adapt instruction, and collaborate meaningfully. Whether through hands-on summer workshops or dedicated professional learning community time, professional learning was treated as a cornerstone of success—not an afterthought.
