This Is for You, Mrs. Guidoboni

This Teacher Appreciation Week, discover the transformative power of teachers through a heartfelt reflection on how one beloved educator sparked a lifelong love of learning and shaped a career dedicated to supporting educators nationwide.

Kelly Sia, the author, as a child.

When I was in second grade, I was pretty sure reading wasn’t for me. But my teacher, Mrs. Guidoboni, saw something in me that I couldn’t see in myself: potential. Every week, she gave me special books to take home, marking specific passages for me to read, guiding me to moments she knew would spark something in me. The passages she selected weren’t the hardest, or the easiest either. They were just right—and they made me feel capable. For the first time, I wanted to read more.

That small act—those carefully chosen passages, her quiet confidence in me—changed everything. It wasn’t just about reading anymore—it was about her belief in me and my ability to accomplish hard things. And magically, I started to believe it too.

The Impact of Educators

As the new CEO of an education company, I’m constantly reminded of the incredible impact of educators. You deserve special recognition and support for inspiring and equipping the next generation.

Curriculum Associates serves a million educators nationwide, so in my role, I’m often in classrooms, talking with teachers, meeting with school and district leaders. I see firsthand how you constantly adapt to change and strive to fulfill the needs of everyone else, often without sufficient resources or time for yourselves. Yet through it all, you never lose focus on what truly matters: your students.

The Heart of Learning

Like Mrs. Guidoboni, great teachers not only teach, but also guide, encourage, and problem solve. You help students who are struggling, celebrate those who are thriving, and support those who need a little extra care. You’re always looking for new and more creative ways to engage your students, to share your love of learning with them, to adjust lessons to fit their learning styles, and bring joy and meaning to their work in the classroom.

Mrs. Guidoboni didn’t just teach me how to be a better reader, she taught me how to believe in myself. Which is why, decades later, I can still picture her face and hear her voice. So many of us are able to share a similar reflection at the drop of a hat. Teachers leave an imprint on every student who walks through their door. It’s something students carry with them for the rest of their lives.

Teachers Make the Difference

There will always be debates about how to fix education, but one truth remains: you make the difference. You make math click for students who thought they weren’t a “numbers” person. You introduce books that open a whole new world. You notice students who are quietly struggling and help them find their place. We are humbled to stand beside you in this challenging but vital work.

A board titled "We Love Teachers" is surrounded by various messages.

Our company was created to support you and your students, and we are deeply grateful for everything you do. On our “We Love Teachers” whiteboard, our team members share their appreciation for all the teachers who shaped their lives—who saw something in them they didn’t see in themselves. Their very own Mrs. Guidoboni. Our teacher appreciation wall is a reminder of the incomparable and transformative impact you have on children’s lives.

Moving Forward, Together

There’s a reason people remember their favorite teacher years—even decades—after they leave school. Teachers change lives. You help children discover who they are, what they love, and what they are capable of achieving. That’s the power of teaching. And that’s why we believe so deeply in supporting educators like you. We will keep listening, learning, and improving, because the best way we can show our appreciation for teachers is to serve you well, every day.

So, from the bottom of my heart, thank you. Thank you for showing up, for believing in your students, and for shaping the future. Mrs. Guidoboni made me feel special in the classroom. It’s now my special privilege to support a million other teachers who do this extraordinary work every day across our country.
