What Is i-Ready Inform? A Teacher's-Eye View

A former teacher breaks down how i-Ready Inform assessment works, and why getting some questions wrong is exactly the point.

Try this tonight. Pick a topic. Any topic. Long division. The water cycle. Why the sky is blue. Now try to explain it to your whole family at the same time: your seven-year-old, your 14-year-old, your spouse, and Grandma. All of them. So they all learn something new. So they are all engaged. So they all feel supported.

It’s incredibly hard, because they are all at different levels.

Teachers do this all day, every day, for about 30 students at once. And this is one area in education where technology can really help. In fact, it’s exactly why i-Ready exists. It meets each child where they are so their teacher can do what only a human can: teach, connect, push, and care. They also build trust, and get to know, love, and challenge every child, understanding what they know, and what they don’t know yet.

As a former teacher who used the i-Ready platform with my 90-plus students in Dorchester, Massachusetts, I’ve spent a lot of time explaining how i-Ready Inform assessment works. Fellow parents who know I work at Curriculum Associates frequently ask me a version of the same question: “My child only got half the questions right. It was hard. Is i-Ready broken?” Here’s how I explain it.

What i-Ready Inform Actually Is

It’s not broken. i-Ready Inform is an assessment, but it’s not a test the way most people picture one. There’s no grade attached to it and nothing to study for beforehand. Its job is to show a teacher exactly where a student stands in reading or math, but not just against their current grade level; also above and below.

It’s also adaptive: it adjusts question by question, based on how a student answers. Get a question right, and the next one gets a little harder. Get one wrong, and it gets a little easier, until the assessment lands on the precise edge of what that child knows. Researchers have spent careers naming that edge. Vygotsky called it the Zone of Proximal Development: the place where actual learning happens. So when a student comes home saying some questions felt too hard, I tell parents that’s the assessment doing its job.

The Value of Getting Some Wrong

i-Ready, like most credible adaptive assessments, is built this way so that students get about 50 percent of the questions right. It’s sometimes hard for us as parents to remember this, but kids need to learn how to be wrong. Cognitive scientists Robert and Elizabeth Bjork call it desirable difficulty. Manu Kapur at Stanford calls it productive failure. The research is undeniable: kids who only see content they have already mastered do not learn. But kids who struggle, in the right zone, with the right support, do.

Here’s what made the biggest difference for me as a teacher. Because i-Ready Inform is an adaptive assessment, it doesn’t stop at one grade level. A high-performing fifth grader can ace a fifth-grade test, and I’d still have no idea what they don’t know yet, because the ceiling is fifth grade. A struggling fifth grader can score zero on that same test, and I’d have no idea what they do know, because the floor is fifth grade.

i-Ready Inform measures across the full K–12 progression instead, so it tells me exactly where a student stands, whether that’s two grades back or two grades ahead. That’s the difference between working off instinct alone and knowing for sure.

The Gift of Time

As soon as my scholars finished, I had their results: not raw student work to score, not a score for the grade book, but the specific data and analysis on which skills to focus on, which students had similar needs, and how to shape the next lesson to move every one of them forward, plus free printable resources to use during instruction. That was real productive time I got back.

I wasn’t entering scores into a spreadsheet or hunting for the right worksheet online (and then likely buying it with my own money). I was marking up lesson plans with who to call on and what to check for, because i-Ready Inform had already helped me do the sorting.

My scholars had the highest student growth percentile, a measured change in student achievement over time, of all fifth-grade cohorts in the state that year, because I was able to meet every single one of them exactly where they were. I have i-Ready Inform to thank for that.

Why Teaching Would Be So Hard without Technology

Go back to that family dinner table for a second. A skilled, caring teacher could try to figure out, by ear and instinct, where each of their 30 students really stand across an entire K–12 range of skills and then design instruction to match. It would take a lot of time, and quite a bit of the decision-making would rely on instinct.

Adaptive technology can do the part that doesn’t require a human: sort through thousands of possible skill combinations in minutes and provide the teacher clear, specific information they can act on. That’s the part i-Ready Inform is built for, and it leaves teachers free to do the part only a person can do: teach, connect, encourage, and care for each of those students as people, not just data points.

Our kids deserve our full attention on what actually moves the needle: engaged teachers, engaged families, honest data, adaptive instruction, productive struggle, and high expectations.
