Middle School Acceleration

Today’s college- and career-readiness standards are more robust than the state standards of yesteryear. Topics like fraction computation, which used to be addressed in middle school, are now mostly completed prior to Grade 6. The current standards in Grades 6 and 7 address pre-algebra concepts, such as computation with signed numbers, solving multi-step equations, and working with ratios and proportions, which develop linear algebra understanding. In addition, the standards in Grade 8 include topics from Algebra 1, such as systems of equations, linear and non-linear functions, and slope-intercept form. i-Ready Classroom Mathematics fully addresses this enhanced rigor, as outlined in current college- and career-readiness standards, and follows a cohesive sequence that provides the appropriate foundation for future advanced mathematics courses. To support districts/schools that have an accelerated middle school pathway to Algebra 1 in Grade 8, we provide pacing and implementation guidance for i-Ready Classroom Mathematics to support this effort for acceleration starting in Grades 6 and 7.
