The i-Ready Dyslexia Screener combines the power of the i-Ready Diagnostic with a one-on-one task-based system to screen for potential risk factors for dyslexia. This approach supports reading intervention for students when it is most needed.
Enhanced for the 2021–2022 School Year
i-Ready assessments support educators in screening for potential risk factors for dyslexia. By combining the i-Ready Diagnostic with additional assessment tasks, this new feature leverages the most current research on dyslexia screening and adheres to the recommendations of the International Dyslexia Association.* Districts can use the i-Ready Dyslexia Screener to help educators determine if specialized reading intervention may be appropriate for individual students. The screener:
- Is available for Grades K–3, with Grade 3 being new for the 2021–2022 school year. It is available at no additional charge to license holders for the i-Ready Diagnostic for Reading.
- Is designed to be overseen by district administrators, with teachers administering the Diagnostic and additional assessment tasks as needed
- Uses nationally recognized, age-appropriate screening techniques such as Rapid Automatized Naming (RAN), Letter Naming Fluency, and Oral Reading Fluency measurement
- Begins with the rigorous i-Ready Diagnostic and, for some students, continues with individually administered tasks to give additional insight into students’ strengths and needs
How It Works
Districts that choose to use the i-Ready Dyslexia Screener will follow these steps:
- Students take the i-Ready Diagnostic. The Diagnostic, which provides a comprehensive picture of students’ reading performance, is also the first step in the screening process.
- Administrators use students’ Diagnostic scores to determine which students should continue in the dyslexia screening process. (Many students’ screening will be complete at this stage, although some students will continue in the process.)
- District or school administrators download offline screening tasks from i-Ready for teachers whose students’ Diagnostic scores indicate a need for further screening.
- Educators print and administer the screening tasks and record results offline. Screening results can be used to identify which students present with specific risk factors for dyslexia.
The i-Ready Dyslexia Screener consists of the i-Ready Diagnostic and additional offline materials:
- The i-Ready Dyslexia Screener Administration Manual guides district leaders through the screening process and specifies which tasks are recommended for individual students, when needed.
- Grades K–3 Offline Screening Tasks: Following a research-based sequence, focus skills and tasks may vary by grade and time of year:
- Grade K: RAN
- Grade 1: Letter Naming Fluency or Oral Reading Fluency focusing on Word Reading Fluency
- Grade 2: Oral Reading Fluency covering Word Reading Fluency or Passage Reading Fluency
- Grade 3: Oral Reading Fluency of Passages and Spelling/Encoding for select students
Grade-specific materials support the administration of screening tasks to individual students.
Educators looking for a more flexible approach to screening students for dyslexia risk factors—particularly in states with dyslexia screening requirements—may instead choose to use the i-Ready Early Reading Tasks and i-Ready Oral Reading Fluency Assessments for screening.
