Head Start educators use our screening and assessment tools for different purposes and in varying situations. Consider the scenarios below. Then, for step-by-step support, choose the scenario that most closely describes how your program is using our Head Start tools or the one that most closely reflects the screening and assessment requirements for your program.

Many programs screen only once. This screening takes place within 45 days of a child’s entry into the program.
Some programs screen multiple times. Each child’s initial screening takes place within 45 days of a child’s entry into the program. Follow-up screenings may take place midyear, end of year, or as indicated by your program to monitor progress.
Many programs screen and then administer assessments from the criterion-referenced IED III—Head Start Edition for a more in-depth and ongoing assessment of skill mastery.
