The Most Challenging Common Core Standards Mathematics
Based on data from over 750,000 students' i-Ready® diagnostics*, the most challenging Common Core Math standards were identified to be related to geometric measurement, modeling problem situations, fractions, and statistics.
But knowing what the most challenging standards are is only half of the equation.
In order to master these areas, you need rigorous instruction for students coupled with practical, point-of-use professional development for teachers. Below are specific grade-level examples of these standards and accompanying Ready® lessons that empower students and teachers to master them.
Most Challenging Mathematics Standards Elementary School Geometric Measurement (Domain: Measurement & Data) Example: CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.2.MD.A.4 Measure to determine how much longer one object is than another, expressing the length difference in terms of a standard length unit. Modeling Problem Situations (Domain: Operations & Algebraic Thinking) Example: CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.4.OA.A.2 Multiply or divide to solve word problems involving multiplicative comparison, e.g., by using drawings and equations with a symbol for the unknown number to represent the problem, distinguishing multiplicative comparison from additive comparison. Fractions (Domain: Number & Operations—Fractions) Example: CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.3.NF.A.3 Explain equivalence of fractions in special cases, and compare fractions by reasoning about their size. Middle School Geometric Measurement (Domain: Geometry) Example: CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.8.G.B.8 Apply the Pythagorean Theorem to find the distance between two points in a coordinate system. Statistics (Domain: Statistics & Probability) Example: CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.6.SP.B.5 Summarize numerical data sets in relation to their context.
*Independent research demonstrated that i-Ready was found to have strong correlations to the 2013 New York State Assessment
(correlations ranged from 0.77–0.85 across grades and subjects).
