Introduction

One of the biggest challenges faced by English-language learners is to achieve proficiency in academic language and vocabulary. While conversational fluency may come relatively quickly, the formal English required on tests, in writing assignments, and in the classroom can take years to master. Each content area has its own specialized vocabulary, and words used in everyday speech may have different meanings when used in math, science, or social studies.

In this Topic in Education you will learn how to help your students meet these challenges. You will see how to enhance vocabulary acquisition in your English-Language Learners (ELLs) by activating their prior knowledge, using graphic organizers, examining word roots, and through oral practice.

This topic was written by Elia Corona, an English-as-a-second-language training specialist at Pharr-San Juan-Alamo Independent School District, in Pharr, Texas. Activities and lesson-plan ideas come from teachers in the district.

Included are text and audio instruction, downloadable examples, handouts, a reading assignment, and a lesson review with which you can assess your learning progress. Approximate time to complete: one hour.
