I had been looking for materials to explicitly teach reading comprehension strategies to 5th grade LD students, and was delighted to find the STARS books. To help them remember the strategies, I had students create their own picture icons (using adhesive mailing labels). They had to write the name of the strategy and a simple picture to represent it. As they learned each strategy, they added the illustrated label for it on the inside covers of their books, for easy reference. We also found it helpful to turn the reading strategies around to use as references for writing prompts.
